Day 2

We went to visit the history museum and library this morning. There, we got to see and learn more about how UESTC had developed over the years from 1956. They also had pictures ( which is extra helpful since I don’t understand ChineseJ)to show how the school changes in appearance over the years and photos of those involved in making what the school (UESTC) it is today. It was a meaningful trip as all of us got to learn more about the history of the school and the people who founded it. They also brought us to the teaching building where we would be having our lessons the next dayJ In the afternoon, a small group of us went for lunch at a small shopping district within the school itself, where they serve HALAL food. It was really great to know that they have HALAL  food in the school especially for the Muslim students including myself..As it meant that I have another option other than eating instant noodles and the snacks that I have brought..The portion of the food served in China greatly differs to those food served in Singapore. The serving size is huge and one bowl of noodle or rice seemed like it was meant for two people!! It is always a challenge to try and finish the food instead of throwing it away. It was a great experience to see the difference and it made me wonder about the other culture differences that we would uncover over the duration of our stay here. We also got to try for the first time a traditional Chinese snack which is a local delicacy known as “Tanghulu” that is also sold within the shopping district. It consists of candied fruits on bamboo skewers that are about 20 cm in length. I think it is difficult to find these in Singapore but in China, it is sold by street vendors and is known to be quite common. I like the strawberry tanghulu the most! J
